Best Day Ever by Kaira Rouda
My Rating: 3.5/5
Release Date: 19 September 2017
Paul, giddy with excitement, packs the car for a blissful couples’ weekend with his wife at their lake house. He has christened their adventure the “best day ever” and everything is planned to perfection. As they drive toward their destination it is evident that something is not right between them. Pasts unfold, secrets come out, and the reader finds herself the victim.
Read if you like: “Girl on the Train,” “Gone Girl,” “Behind Closed Doors,” “Behind Her Eyes”–really, any story with a tagline that reads something like, “perfect couple or perfect LIE?!” I very nearly skipped this thriller, having had my fill of unreliable narrators and disturbing, dysfunctional marriages. I’m glad I didn’t. Without being too clever or self aware, Rouda takes this genre of married madness and does something new with it. For the sake of maintaining a “no spoiler” review I will not elaborate but it was a welcome alternative . A fast, fun, and delightfully frustrating thriller, I’m only sorry it is not released until September. Would make for a fabulous summer read.
