I’M THINKING OF ENDING THINGS by Iain Reid
Release Date: 14 June 2016 (now in paperback)
My Rating: 3/5
It isn’t a long drive to Jake’s parents’ house but it is a strange one. Our protagonist has a lot on her mind. She is thinking of ending things with Jake. She is also troubled by a mysterious caller who won’t speak to her but leaves frightening messages she can’t understand. What begins as a drama with tense undertones blossoms into an all out psychological horror-thriller.
This novel kept me guessing through the end. I mean that quite literally. I had actually no idea what happened once the twist slammed into me. This little book is not what it seems to be. At the risk of over-preparing you, after a quick re-read of the last 30 or so pages (and a flip back to the beginning) I am confident I “get it” but it is truly bizarre. This is a fast-paced, dynamite novel. Unfortunately it missed the mark for me. The narrator’s conversations with Jake seem forced, the intellectuality put on. The things they discuss (Jung, science) are heavy handed and unnatural. Much of the beginning of this book is made irrelevant later and I felt cheated. I recommend this book for horror fans and those who love a truly mind-boggling twist.
